Day 17

I can't imagine that many of you were able to get that mobile phone game to work, if you did, I hope you also found more programs on that site to fill up your memory card with.

Another classic but re-packaged, you get not one but lots (four or five?) games with today's link these you play on your web browser so should work for most viewers.

Sunday 14 December 2008

Day 14

While it's quite possible we'll have a white Christmas this year in the UK, I don't think we'll have quite so much snow. My dog would poke her nose outside, shiver and come back in!

Today's game is a classic, if you've been on the Internet for more than 12 months you'll almost certainly know this one.

You have to download and install the game, it's only a trial version but you do get an hour of entertainment from it.

Saturday 13 December 2008

Day 13

A little delayed today since last night was the works Christmas party and I was, a little worse for ware.

The cartoon from day 12 was reminiscent of the short cartoons that used to play on BBC2 back in the day when we only had a choice from three channels.

A nice, Christmassy YouTube clip for today.

Friday 12 December 2008

Day 12

My apologies for not getting Day 11 up in a timely fashion. I thought I'd uploaded the page but must have made a mistake somewhere.

BigBuckBunny was produced in an "open source" environment, meaning that it was written and produced as a project with input from many different people and the final product not tied to the tight copyright laws of most films.

Day 12 we have another cartoon, a little strange and will no doubt scare the willies out of Doug!

There's also a new Dumbed Down Life recording, number 51!

Scissors, paper and making stuff. Just like Blue Peter. Thanks again to Gardenfey from LiveJournal for that practical post.

Day 9

I did warn you didn't I? I was up until 5am playing that last game, a bad case of the "just one more level".

A chance to step away from the computer with this next door.

Monday 8 December 2008

Day 8

The game from Day 7 takes a while to get into and will possibly take up many, many hours, introduce to you people all over the world, and let you take their stuff :)

Today's gem really should come with a warning...

*** WARNING, HIGHLY ADDICTIVE ***

Saturday 6 December 2008

Day 7

I may not have been clear with what you actually got on Day 6, it was a set of related YouTube clips that play one after the other, if you only saw the first clip then you didn't get the whole experience.

For day 7 another game, though this time not a puzzle game one that could potentially entertain you while the rest of the family are watching The Muppets Christmas Carol on Dec 25th!

Day 6

I was not able to complete all the puzzles on the game from day 5, I hope you had better luck. Unlike most advent calendars that are thrown away once all the doors have been opened this one will remain available though you'll have to bookmark it as there won't be links on the main menu for "Christmas" all year round!

Giving your brain a break for Day 6.

Friday 5 December 2008

Day 5

Today's treat has a small price to pay, you have to watch a commercial before the game starts but it's worth it.

Quite a difficult one this one an I have to admit I've not gotten very far yet.

Thanks again to Ken from Derby (dad :) )

Day 4

Did you finish all the levels of the game on day 3? The good thing is that I found when I returned to the game it had remembered which puzzles I'd already completed.

Today is another brain teaser, this one sent in by Gardenfey from LiveJournal.

Day 3

The treat for December 2nd was a link to a free online game, this game was one that was produced originally by a company that I worked for. Now, ten years later the game is free and still thriving.

December 3rd is another free game, this link provided by Ken from Derby, thanks Dad ;)

Did You Get It?

Just to make sure that everything is working ok, behind the first door for the advent calendar you should have found a link to the YouTube video for "Straight No Chaser". Having got 8 million views to this specific video they signed a record contract and their album was released back in October.

If you didn't see the video, make sure you clicked the image after opening the little door.

Not all the doors will hide YouTube videos. The door for day two is an example of this.

If you have technical problems with the page please let me know. I've tested it on several different browsers but there's always something different to cause problems.

The show "airs" every week at around 9pm UK time. And the podcast is generally ready for down load a few hours later.

It's a pre-recorded show this week because the conversation between me in the UK and Lance and Doug in the US was almost two hours and had to be edited down.

Technical Issues And Mistakes

So tonight, Lance was supposed to record the show but his computer messed up. The start of the recording was now half an hour late as I had to transfer all the files which Lance had onto my machine.

After the delay and a couple of false starts the show got going.

The quality of the recording still isn't right, I'm having trouble with the codecs used to encode the MP3 files.

When we got to the last track of the show I forgot to turn the microphone off and the conversation between Lance and I went on the record.

While putting the details of the MP3 file onto the site for upload I kept typing "Show 42" instead of 41!!! While all references to the show on the web page are right the show will appear as 42 on your MP3 player.

AAAAAAAARGH.

You'd think that after so many shows we'd have this down to an art by now!

Thoughts

Doug and I had a discussion after the show last night and we think we want to try to improve the show a little. Currently we all separately decide on a topic and then arrange the show so each of us have a specific slot for our section.

The last few shows I personally have really struggled with my topic and this has resulted in a fairly flat show. the same thing happened last night.

When we stream live we generally go back on air once the show has been recorded and chat amongst ourselves and just mess around, talking to the people in the chat room on our website (www.dumbeddownlife.com/chat.htm). Last night the fun really kicked in during the after-show party and I think that was more fun and more engaging than the show itself.

I think it's come to a stage now that we are all very comfortable with the idea of broadcasting and we now need to work on getting the show to sound a little more professional and yet more free flowing at the same time. There are too many times where we pause or um and err which isn't great but we also have a tendency to geek out too much with tech related stuff.

I feel that the idea of the show was to be a light hearted look at life and that is slowly being lost with the need to find a "topic". I would like the show to sound much more like three guys chewing the fat down the pub, broken up with music and little soundbites etc........

My GPS Experience

A topic that has come up a couple of times on DDL is GPS tracking. I'd never used a GPS system myself, more a fan of the map or printed directions from the Internet.

On my latest trip to the US I did a lot of driving. First from Chicago out to the Quad Cities in Illinois where my father in law lives, this was pretty uneventful.

After staying overnight at my father in law's house I then drove down to Camden, Missouri. The first five and a half hours of the six hour journey were pretty uneventful. With two teenagers in the car I was press-ganged into listening to some of the most awful choices of music that I have the misfortune to have on my iPod.

As we got to with 20 miles of our destination, onto a road that I actually recognised, the GPS suggested that I "turn left". My instincts said this was wrong, my mapquest.com print-out instructions said this was wrong but hey, it's GPS, it must have some kind of information that I didn't know about?

I turned off of the main road, two lanes either direction, onto the smaller road. Straight away I knew that the GPS was right. The traffic on this road was zero. Having spent a while in queues it was nice to be doing 50Mph again, yup, this may not be the main road but it's certainly... "Turn right in 500 yards." OK, all knowing GPS, your wish is my... hmm, is this a road? Can't be, I'll try a little further down. "Please turn around as soon as possible."

Somewhat apprehensively I drove into what looked like a private, rough, loose road.

You know those horror films where GPS leads the victim up a road to a haunted house and the car and it's occupants are never seen again? This was one of those!!!

I couldn't see behind me because of the cloud of dust that my shiny little rental car was kicking up. "In three hundred yards turn right." the GPs called out. This road was hardly a road and it had turnings? Yup, it sure did!

We passed what I would call a classic American farm house, built from wood, three or four rusty trucks in the front yard and two old men on the front porch in rocking chairs, both with a shotgun across their laps. They tipped their hats politely as we rumbled slowly by.

In my mind I was just imagining having to walk back to the farm house to get them to use their truck to get the rental car out of a ditch.

I got a text message from my wife "Where R U?", to which my daughter replied "Dunno!".

After about ten minutes on this road we came to a bridge. Not one of those "Bridges Of Madison County" covered bridges, no a single lane, 400 foot long, swinging bridge.

As we got off the other side the locals in their truck with fishing rods gave us a knowing look, if you're down here in a rental car, chances are that GPS sent you.

When we finally got to our destination I still couldn't see out of the back window. The dust and dirt covered the back of the car to such an extent that it hid the rear number plate and blocked the rear back window.

I told my wife about our little detour and she of course wanted to see so later in the week we took the 4x4. Funny, when I had my baseball cap, my 4x4 and my farmers tan the looks from the locals were quite different.

Performer Feedback

It's not often we get a response from the artists we play on the show so it is always pleasant when someone takes the time to do so.

We use music from the Podsafe Music Network which, in simple terms, allows us to play music without having to pay royalties etc.

The only proviso is that we inform the artist that we have played their track

We have just received this....

"Hi there Daz & Lance,
Sorry if I've missed another name I couldn't find it.
I just wanted to say cheers for playing one of my songs on your show.

It shows you've got taste! Like your style, keep it up. I'm in Thailand, but I'm from the UK myself. I'm an Essex boy at heart!

Thanks again
Be well

Dumbed Down Life 031

Live again, a short show after a couple that almost ran to an hour. Now we have our own server to stream with the conversations carried on into the night, long after the recordings stopped. This of course was when some of our funniest material came out. Lance claims to have recorded some of the after show frolics, keep watching to see if we put up any additional material.

Dumbed Down Life Radio

Recently we have had a few issues with the streaming service that we were using which has caused us to be unable to do a live broadcast for a while. Now when we did the first Dumbed Down Live it was only intended as a bit of fun and not something we really planned on doing that regularly. It turned out that we liked the experience and we did get some positive feedback from it so we carried on with it.

The trouble we had was that as this was a free public service we had to rely on being able to book the 1 hour slot that we wanted. Also there began to be some login issues with the service.

So we have altered things a little and we now have a service that is 100% our own, which means that we can stream live broadcasts or anything we like at any time of the day.

With that in mind I'm pleased to inform you that DDL Radio has gone live :)

You can now listen to a 24 hour streaming archive of all of our previous shows direct from this site. just head over to the chat page and click on the link to listen in.

This will also be used for live broadcasts when we record a new episode.

Dumbed Down Life 030

A day late this week, like you expect us to keep to a schedule!

Some of the more sensitive subjects appear to be more popular with our audience so this week we cover golf and the new Batman film. Eh? Who writes this stuff?

Site Update

A rare post from me...

I've finally managed to catch up with the "Bands Played" section of the site. You can now view a list of every song we have played on the show complete with links to that show and the Artist's website.

My text few tasks are to add those bands to the random box on the left hand side of the page layout and complete the work required on some video interviews we have done.....

(it's not just 45 minutes a week you know, lol)

Dumbed Down T-Shirt

We created some sample t-shirts using special transfers that you run through your own printer then iron on to a t-shirt.

After wearing my t-shirt a few times, the gleaming white soon picked up blobs of chocolate and jam and needed washing.

I followed the instructions, turning the t-shirt inside out, washing it at a low temperature and not drying it in the tumble drier. The logos on the chest and arm appear to be OK but the web site address printed across the back is already showing signs of stress. I don't think that this will stand being washed too many times.

Easier On The Download

We'd noticed that with the inline podcast player and the frequent YouTube videos being posted that the home page to the website was starting to take a while to load. We've now cut down the amount of old shows listed on the home page to 6. For anything further back go to "The Archives" where you can find the shows by month, by number or by using the Google search box to look through the entire site.

Celine Dion's version of AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" has been voted the worst cover song of all time but we beg to differ.
